This $60M pink diamond could be the most expensive ever

The record for the most expensive diamond ever sold might be shattered in two weeks, when a pink diamond expected to fetch $60 million goes up for auction.

The Pink Star diamond has 59.60 carats, and is the largest flawless fancy pink diamond the Gemological Institute of America has ever graded, according to Sotheby’s, which is doing the auction. The auction is happening on April 4th at Sotheby’s Hong Kong.

This will not be the first time Sotheby’s sells the Pink Star diamond; it sold in 2013 to diamond cutter Isaac Wolf for $83.2 million, but he defaulted on the payment. Two diamond companies took partial ownership of the diamond, which was stored at Sotheby’s in the meantime.

The current record holder for the most expensive polished diamond ever sold is the Oppenheimer Blue diamond, which sold for $58 million in May 2016 to a private collector. And a 812.77-carat rough diamond fetched $63 million at auction in May 2016.
