Somebody paid $3M for a coin — and obviously that’s a record

Lots of kids like to collect coins, so when grown ups do they call themselves numismatists. But when the super rich collect coins it’s called “investing.”

A rare 1804 silver dollar sold for almost $3.3 million last week. The stunning sale broke the record for the for a coin auction, bringing in almost $106.7 million in total.

A five-part sale of the D. Brent Pogue coin collection was held over a two years period by Stack’s Bowers Galleries of Santa Ana, California, in conjunction with Sotheby’s in Baltimore.

Friday was the last day of the auction and brought in an additional $21.4 million, including the sale of the 1804 dollar, an 1811 half cent that sold for $998,750, and a 1793 Liberty Cap cent that sold for $940,000 (making it the most valuable circulated cent ever sold), according to CBS Baltimore.
