Depressed? Gwyneth Paltrow recommends walking barefoot as a cure

Feeling down? Irritable? Unable to sleep?

Well forget about traditional treatments like therapy and sleeping pills; according to Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop blog (aka, our bible), the only thing you need to do to cure yourself is take off your shoes.

This treatment — called “Earthing” — is supposed to help you because the earth has “an infinite supply of free electrons, so when a person is grounded, those electrons naturally flow between the earth and the body, reducing free radicals and eliminating any static electrical charge.” Got it?

If you’re wondering whether this is real or not, don’t worry, because Goop interviews a “longtime earthing-movement leader” who tells a nice little story to explain the benefits of earthing. We’ve copied it below:

“I grew up on a ranch in Montana—imagine a rabbit eating grass, enjoying life, and a coyote sneaks up on him. The rabbit hears the coyote and gets a jolt of adrenaline and cortisol, so he runs, and starts zig-zagging across the pasture. As soon as the coyote stops chasing, the rabbit will stop—and instantly shake it off and go back to eating like nothing ever happened: He can quickly discharge that adrenaline and cortisol. Today, since we’re no longer naturally grounded, we hold all these natural fight-or-flight responses in the body, and there’s no way to discharge them; which contributes greatly to stress and anxiety.”

That sure convinces us!

Oh, and did we mention, there are “earthing” products to buy as well that this movement leader just happens to produce? It turns out, you shouldn’t sleep without your Earthing Fitted Queen sheet for $199 or your plush pad for $99.

Who knew being barefoot was so expensive?
