This winter, fire gutted Sag Harbor’s beloved Main Street cinema. It was a double tragedy since community efforts had only recently saved the theater from developers. Now the community is once again rallying together to rebuild the cinema.
Artist April Gornik (wife of painter Eric Fischl) is leading a nonprofit group to bring back the Sag Harbor Cinema.
The Sag Harbor Partnership is buying the theater from owner Gerald Mallow, who’s owned the theater of 38 years, accoding to the New York Post. Gornick’s group will work to raise funds from private donors via SagHarborPartnership.org. Eventually, they hope to rebuild the cinema, art deco facade and all.
However, there will be some new additions. Plans call for a café and an arts centere for year-round “education, outreach and programming.” [NYP]
