James Beard Award winners announced, NYC scoops some top honors

After months of whittling down entrants, last night, at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the James Beard Foundation finally announced this year’s big winners in the chef and restaurant categories.

New York City, naturally, took home some top awards.

Le Coucou, the Soho spot at 138 Lafayette Street, scooped a big win and walked away with the Best New Restaurant award, and owner Stephen Starr won Outstanding Restaurateur.

Ghaya Oliveira, executive pastry chef at Daniel, won Outstanding Pastry Chef. 

Marco Canora of Hearth, the upscale Tuscan-American eatery at 403 East 12th Street, was dubbed the Best Chef: New York City.

Manhattan mainstay Grand Central Oyster Bar and Restaurant won Design Icon.

Across the bridge in Brooklyn, Middle Eastern grocery store Sahadi’s, was crowned one of America’s Classics.

Meanwhile, a little further afield, the farm-to-table eatery Blue Hill at Stone Barns in Pocantico Hills, NY, won the award for Outstanding Service.
