Are avocados out to get us? As if $22 avocado toast wasn’t bad enough, now the fruit is causing actual physical injury.
HuffPo blows the lid off the avocado conspiracy in a recent piece about “Avocado hand,” cautioning people to take care when cutting the trendy treat. (There are nearly 6 million Instagram pics tagged #avocado, not to mention the nearly 400,000 labeled #avocadotoast.)
Any way you slice it, this is a real danger, explained the British Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons, who report an increase in avocado-related injuries. “Accidentally slicing yourself instead of your avocado can cause serious damage to nerves and tendons in the hand, with some patients reportedly never regaining full use of their hand,” the article details. Dr. Eccles of BARRAS said he treats about four patients a week– especially during the “post-brunch surge” on Saturdays.
While these doctors don’t advocate for warning labels on the pricey produce — avocados are at their highest price point in 19 years! — caution needs to be taken when cutting out the pit. Clearly the green menaces are like a box of chocolates — you never know what you are going to get. It is easy to have a mishap when slicing and extracting the pit, especially since avocados are known for being either too soft or too hard.
Case in point: Meryl Streep was seen wearing a bandage on her hand in 2012, and reportedly had to get stitches before undergoing surgery as a result of her avocado-related injury.
Clearly no one is safe and this is getting very out of hand. [HP]
