This rainbow-colored Indonesian village is attracting Instagrammers from all over the world

If you haven’t heard of Kampung Pelangi, Indonesia, you obviously are not a member of the global, Instagramming elite. The village has suddenly become a must-visit destination for those living for the ‘gram, because the entire place is painted in rainbow colors.

The reason for this cheerful paint job? Apparently the town was looking to attract more tourists, which they certainly have. 223 houses in the village were painted at least three colors, with 3D paintings on the walls. The town raised almost $5 million for the project, and it has already started to pay off as residents are selling food, drinks and souvenirs to photo-hungry travelers. According to Lonely Planet, they are hoping to expand to 390 houses, plus use the money to do other local projects like the clean the river.

Seeing as more than 2,600 photos have been tagged #kampungpelangi on Instagram so far, we would say the project is a pretty big (and beautiful!) success. [LP]
