For anyone sick of trying to meet a partner on dating apps or in bars, there might be a simple solution: marry yourself. According to CBS, this is an actual thing that people are doing. It even has a name! Sologamy.
Of course, companies are cashing in on this “trend” and sites are springing up like www.IMarriedMe.com, which offers $230 kits with a self-wedding ring (that you are supposed to “wear to remind you every day to LOVE YOURSELF”) vows and daily affirmation cards.
One woman who had such a ceremony in (where else?) Brooklyn told CBS that she decided to do it because she was sick of people asking her when she was going to get married. Plus, the ceremony isn’t legally binding so… she can actually marry another person if she wants to.
“I would describe it as women saying yes to themselves,” she told CBS. “It means that we are enough, even if we are not partnered with someone else.”
While we’re all for that sentiment, the idea of actually staging (and paying for!) a ceremony to commit to yourself seems kind of … unnecessary? As my single friend put it: “Don’t ever let me do this.” Don’t worry, girl. Friends don’t let friends marry themselves. [CBS]
