Claude Wasserstein, the third wife of the late Bruce Wasserstein, has just listed her palatial apartment at 995 Fifth Avenue for $65 million.
And when we say palatial, we mean the thing has a freaking garden on the top of it. The listing is scant on details, but does say the 5,255-square-foot pad has six bedrooms and seven bathrooms. Wasserstein paid around $35 million for the unit in 2008, which she bought directly from the developer, Extell, according to the Real Deal, which first reported the listing. The building had been the former Stanhope Hotel until Extell converted it in 2005 and delivered it to Wasserstein in “white-box” condition.
What she did with that white box is pretty incredible, as these listing photos show. The apartment was featured in Vogue (which called it a “rooftop playhouse”), and noted that she worked with designers Jacques Grange, Jeffrey Bilhuber, and Daniel Romualdez to create the space.
“I feel like I have a suburban house in the city with a cottage garden,” Wasserstein told Vogue. “I grew up in France, and I love flowers. I love that I can look out and feel I am in a garden with the New York landscape behind it.” She quietly listed the apartment for $65 million in 2010.
Wasserstein, who was born in France, is a former CBS news producer. Her late ex-husband Bruce was an extremely successful financier, former owner of New York Magazine and the brother of the playwright Wendy Wasserstein.
