“Fearless Girl” meet “Pissing Pug”

The Financial District is turning into a very bitchy sculpture park.

Since 1989, “Charging Bull” has attracted tourists itching for a rub on the brass bull’s nethers. But when the new “Fearless Girl” sculpture was added to the plaza on International Women’s Day, an artistic turf war was ignited that has now drawn yet another sculpture. Meet “Pissing Pug,” a sculpture of a small dog by city sculptor Alex Gardega that appears to be peeing on the leg of the “Fearless Girl.”

“This is corporate nonsense,” Gardega told the New York Post of “Fearless Girl,” a sculpture praised by feminists. Gardega argues that far from making a feminist statement, the sculpture is in fact a cheap advertisement, and not art at all. He points to the fact that it was installed by a Boston-based financial firm.

“It has nothing to do with feminism, and it is disrespect to the artist that made the bull,” he said. “That bull had integrity.”

“I decided to build this dog and make it crappy to downgrade the statue, exactly how the girl is a downgrade on the bull,” he added. [NYP]
