Obamas buy $8M mansion to keep an eye on what’s happening in D.C.

Barack Obama may no longer be the president, but that doesn’t mean he’s leaving Washington D.C. The ex-pres has bought the home he was leasing in the Kalorama section of D.C. for $8.1 million, reports the Chicago Sun Times.

“Given that President and Mrs. Obama will be in Washington for at least another two-and-a-half years, it made sense for them to buy a home rather than continuing to rent property,” Obama spokesperson Kevin Lewis told the Times.

The Obamas had been renting the home at 2446 Belmont Road NW since May of last year from Joe Lockhart, former White House press secretary under Bill Clinton, and his wife Giovanna Lockhart, an editor at Glamour magazine (they are now living in Tribeca, as we reported last June).

The 8,200-square-foot home has nine bedrooms, eight and a half bathrooms, gardens, and room for 8-10 cars to park (which is good for Obama’s security detail). It also has some pretty powerful neighbors, as Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner rent a home in the neighborhood for $15,000-a-month and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson also lives nearby. [CST]
