Around the world in 80 properties: A romantic castle in Estonia

Located in the Republic of Estonia, this manor house — or mini castle — looks like it fell out of a fairy tale.

Built in 1892 by the German nobleman Woldemar von Uexküll, the castle is known as “Laitse manor” or Laitz in German. The building is one of the best preserved examples of Gothic Revival style in the country. It is currently being used as a hotel (rates start at $180/night), restaurant wedding venue and space for seminars.

As for the nitty gritty, the castle clocks in at 16,145 square feet, and has 15 bedrooms set on about five acres. It’s asking €2.5 million (about $2.8 million). The listing is sparse on details, but from the photos it we see the property has a personal chapel, beautiful outdoor space and glorious wallpaper everywhere. Like most castles, this one looks like it could a little work. But in our opinion, that’s all part of its gloomy, romantic charm.
