After twenty seven years of anonymity, graffiti artist Banksy may have had his true identity revealed by one of his (probably former) friends.
In a recent interview on the podcast “Distraction Pieces,” British music producer Goldie seems to have accidentally spoken the first name of the mysterious artist.
“Give me a bubble letter and put it on a T-shirt and write ‘Banksy’ on it, and we’re sorted. We can sell it now. No disrespect to Robert, I think he is a brilliant artist. I think he has flipped the world of art over.”
Many are speculating that this “Robert” is none other than Robert Del Naja, a founding member of the band “Massive Attack.” Del Naja is a longtime friend of Goldie’s, and the two were graffiti artists together in Bristol during the late 80’s. So it kind of makes sense.
The theory that Banksy is actually Del Naja has been out there for some time after a “researcher” found that his graffiti tended to pop up in places where “Massive Attack” has toured. Hmmmm. [Metro]
