International man of mystery/Italian auto heir lists dream UWS penthouse for $19M

We were starting to get a bit jaded about the New York City penthouse scene (how many floor-to-ceiling windows can a person look at?). And then we saw this one.

Located at the Hotel des Artistes at 1 West 67th Street, this penthouse is quite possibly one of the most beautiful homes we’ve ever encountered. We shouldn’t be surprised given the nature of its owner, Jean “Johnny” Pigozzi, the Italian heir to the French Simca automobile brand/party photographer/entrepreneur/playboy/investor in plus size fashion/man of the world.

According to Bloomberg, Pigozzi bought the unit 30 years ago from a painter (though he qualified he “was not a great painter”) and hired the late Italian architect Ettore Sottsass to redesign it top-to-bottom.

Per the listing, with Deborah Grubman and David Adler of Corcoran and Roberta Golubock and Mark Thomas Amadei of Sotheby’s, the 5,377-square-foot apartment spans three floors and has three bedrooms, seven and a half bathrooms, 19-foot ceilings (and 15-foot windows with views of Central Park), a solarium and an 827-square-foot private terrace off the master bedroom. As you can see from the images, the whole thing is filled with Pigozzi’s collection of African art (he has the world’s largest collection of it).

Pigozzi also owns homes in Switzerland, the South of France and Los Angeles and says he is selling because he hardly comes to New York. He has rented the apartment to some of his famous friends (including Mick Jagger), he told Bloomberg, “I’m selling it with big tears in my eyes….I spent 30 happy years in it.” [Bloomberg]
