Rare privately owned Turner painting sells for nearly $24M

Turner is having a moment. First their was the bioflick. Then there was the successful exhibition at the Frick. Now, a rare Turner painting sold for roughly $23.7  at auction in London at Sotheby’s Old Masters, according to the Nation.

Only six major works by the artist are still in private hands, making the recent sale especially rare and exciting for collectors.

The landscape painting depicts Ehrenbreitstein, a mountain on the east bank of the Rhine in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

The last Turner painting to hit the auction block fetched £30 million (roughly $38.5 million) in 2014. [Nation]
