Socialite status doesn’t get you through the door downtown

For Manhattan’s familiar faces and masters of the universe, ID is seldom necessary. But it seems their credit doesn’t extend to downtown.

Socialite and philanthropist Jean Shafiroff was recently included in Downtown Magazine’s new “Downtown 100” but when she went to attend the lifestyle mags’ party at the Lower East Side’s Hotel Chantelle she was rebuffed at the door, despite showing up in a  “strapless, red poof Oscar de la Renta dress from this season,” a source told the New York Post.

“Jean could not get into the party because she did not have a photo ID. Even [gossip reporter] George [Wayne], after explaining who she was at the door, could not get her in,”

“I was flattered they didn’t think I was old enough to get in, and I understand that clubs need security. But this kind of craziness is really going overboard,” Shaffirof told the Post.

She was ultimately forced head back uptown.
