Diamond-studded Birkin bag sets auction record

From left: the Hermès Birkin bag, which set an auction record, and a Himalayan Crocodile Birkin with 18K white gold features and diamonds

What’s better than an Hermès Birkin bag? A Birkin bag with diamonds on it!

One such bag in fuschia crocodile just sold at Christie’s International Plc in Hong Kong for HK$1.72 million ($223,000) – setting the record for the most expensive bag ever sold at auction, Bloomberg reports. It was purchased by an anonymous phone buyer. There is no word yet on whether it was a wife bonus.

Previously, the record was held by another totally blinged-out diamond and gold handbag that used to belong to – who else – Elizabeth Taylor, which sold at Christie’s in New York for $218,500 in 2011.

If you’re really going for the craziest bag lady award, though, then take a look at this Himalayan Crocodile Birkin with 18K white gold features and diamonds, which is on sale from the luxury antiques dealer 1stdibs for $450,000. According to their site, it is the “rarest, most desirable and stunning handbag in the world, ” which “features a subtle coloration, done in Niloticus crocodile, that is meant to evoke images of the majestic Himalayan mountains.”  For that price, it better transport you to the top of Mount Everest on a cloud of lilacs. – Isabel Schwab
