UPDATED, 5:00 p.m., Aug. 25: For millionaires/billionaires who really have no interest in interacting with anyone ever again, there is finally an answer. Christie’s has just announced that it’s selling portable islands. As in, islands that you plant anywhere in the world (not, as we originally thought, islands that travel. That’s called a boat).
The company Amillarah is working with Christie’s and Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ocean Futures Society on the project, which allows you to design your own island and plant it anywhere in the world you would like. Apparently, owning an apartment or a house like the rest of us plebs is so last year. Says Yolande Barnes, director of Savills World Research:
“For the world’s wealthy, the pinnacle of achievement is to own what is exclusive and rare, so an island property goes hand-in-hand with a luxury apartment in a prime city.”
One thing the website does not share? The price. LLNYC reached out to Amillarah, which said that while there is no fixed price for these custom islands, the starting price is about $10 million. Considering that’s the price of a decent apartment in Manhattan right now, it doesn’t sound too bad!
In the meantime, watch the brand’s (slightly creepy) video below.
