What does it look like when the “Kim Kardashian of China” gets married? Pretty freaking lavish. According to Forbes, the wedding of 26-year old actress/model/singer Angela Yeung (better known as “Angelababy”) to actor Huang Xiaoming cost a whopping $31 million (to put that in perspective, Kate and Will’s royal wedding cost $34 million and the real Kim Kardashian’s only cost $12 million).

2,000 people were invited to the wedding, which took place in the Shanghai Exhibition Center on October 8th. There was a holographic castle, a ten-foot cake shaped like a carousel that took a month to make and gift bags that included mobile phones. Her dress was made from 115 feet of organza and 165 feet of tulle, and it took the couture staff at Christian Dior five months to make. And her engagement ring, below, comes from the French jeweler Chaumet and features a five-carat diamond, making it worth an estimated $1.8 million.

Like the real Kim Kardashian, however, we aren’t sure how long this wedding is going to last. A week after the wedding, Angelababy went through a series of X-rays and facial probes for her lawsuit against a clinic that had claimed she had had plastic surgery. Ever the loyal husband/fiancé, Xiaoming said in an interview in 2014 that she couldn’t have had plastic surgery because “actually she sometimes looks quite ugly to me.” Oof. He then continued “I’m not an idiot, I definitely can tell she hasn’t had plastic surgery, sometimes she doesn’t put on make up and she really looks like those ugly pictures of her.”

No wonder he spent $1.8 million on her ring; he had to make that comment up to her somehow!

So where did they get the money? China has marginal income tax rates of 45% or so. In order to earn $31MM net to pay for the wedding they would have to have made $60MM or so. Are you sure they’re not using the hong Kong dollars, roughly $0.13 or $4MM US?
