Maximalist interior designer Juan Pablo Molyneux buys Sutton Place apartment for $5M

Star interior designer Juan Pablo Molyneux and his wife Pilar have bought themselves a very nice apartment at 322 East 57th Street for $4.75 million, according to city records. Charlie Attias was the buyer’s agent.

The duplex apartment has four bedrooms and four bathrooms, giant windows, 20-foot ceilings, a north-facing terrace, a spiral staircase and walk-in closets.

Molyneux and Pilar sold their Upper East Side townhouse in December for $22.5 million to Highgate Hotels co-founder Mahmood Khimji, $19.4 million more than what they paid for the home in 1990. The home’s lavish interiors were featured in Harper’s Bazaar last January. His firm is based in the Upper East Side and Le Marais in Paris.

Though his Molyneux’s new apartment looks very tastefully and simply designed, we have a feeling it won’t stay that way. Molyneux is famous for his “maximalist” design aesthetic, which pretty much means he likes to add lots and lots and lots of beautiful things to a house he is designing. Unsurprisingly, given this fact, one of his many projects involved designing the entire 40,000-square-foot palace for the ruling family of Qatar.
