Fire erupts in Manhattan’s most prestigious co-op: 740 Park Avenue

A fire broke out on Wednesday afternoon at 740 Park Avenue, one of the most expensive and exclusive buildings in the city. Two firefighters were injured in the blaze. The fire is now under control.

According to, the fire started in Bernie Madoff associate Ezra Merkin’s apartment on the sixth floor. Merkin’s apartment is apparently severely damaged.

Also affected was hedge funder David Ganek’s duplex apartment 6/7A, which is currently listed for $32.5 million and has been on the market since July 2014 (when it was listed for $44 million). According to city records, Ganek bought the apartment in 2005 for $19.1 million.

740 Park has many notable residents, including Ronald and Jo Carole Knopf Lauder (of the Estée Lauder fortune; his unit price was undisclosed); the fashion designer Vera Wang (whose unit cost $23 million); and billionaire David Koch of Koch Industries (his unit price was undisclosed). The building was the subject of Michael Gross’ 2006 book “740 Park: The Story of the World’s Richest Apartment Building.”
