The hottest new luxury hotel in London used to be a jail

The Courthouse Hotel Shoreditch has just opened up in trendy East London, and its on the site of the Old Street Magistrates’ Court and Police Station – and its accompanying jail cells.

According to the Daily Mail, the jail was active from 1903 until 1996 and during that time the likes of Ronnie and Reggie Kray – London’s infamous twin gangsters – stopped by for a stay.

We expect these days guests will be treated to a little more luxury: The spot where the twins stood trial has actually been transformed into a bar area.

The transformation from courthouse to swanky new boutique hotel hotel cost £40 million ($57.5 million), and there are 86 rooms and 42 suites. Guests can access a 196-seat cinema, an indoor swimming pool, a spa, and fitness suite, a two-lane bowling alley and three bars, including one on a rooftop terrace overlooking the city. According to the hotel’s website there is also a “unique ‘historical’ restaurant concept.”

Perhaps dining behind bars?
