A Californian distillery named Hangar 1 is turning San Francisco’s fog into $125 bottles of vodka.
According to Hangar 1, Fog Point vodka is, “a true expression of California, distilled.”
To produce Fog Point, the distillery set up fog catchers – stretched mesh canvases that hang high in the air – in four fog-rich locations around San Fransisco: Sutro Tower, Berkeley Hills, Outer Sunset and El Sobrante.
When fog hits the screens, the water vapor condenses and the resulting beads of moisture are caught in its fibers and trickle down into a trough to be collected.
That water is then blended with vodka distilled from wine sourced from Bonny Doon, a sustainable vineyard in Santa Cruz.
According to their website, the resulting liquor is an, “extraordinarily crisp, pure, and gluten free sipping vodka with elegant hints of pear, citrus, and honeysuckle.”
The limited edition booze is currently available to pre-order online for $125 a bottle, with all profits set to be donated to water conservation.
