Johnny Depp to auction off multi-million dollar art collection

Getting divorced is expensive — even if you’re a movie star worth $400 million.

In the midst of his very public (and scandal-ridden) divorce from Amber Heard, Johnny Depp has decided to list nine of his Jean-Michel Basquiat paintings at Christies’ Post-War and Contemporary Art Sale happening in London on June 29 and 30th.

According to Christies, Depp has been assembling his art collection over 25 years and the works that he is selling almost all come from 1981. “Nothing can replace the warmth and immediacy of Basquiat’s poetry, or the absolute questions and truths that he delivered. The beautiful and disturbing music of his paintings, the cacophony of his silence that attacks our senses, will live far beyond our breath,” Depp is quoted as saying in a 2000 book about Basquiat. Among the works for sale are Basquiat’s “Pork,” which the artist painted on a door and is expected to fetch $3.6-$5 million.

Heard filed for divorce in May, after only 15 months of marriage to Depp. Because he did not sign a prenup, she is entitled to half of the money he made during their marriage — between $20 to $30 million. Heard has claimed that Depp physically abused her and she has been granted a temporary restraining order against him.
