Everyone in New York is obsessed with perfumes that double as mosquito repellants

Worried about Zika but don’t want to smell like you’re drowning in chemicals? According to the Times, the latest craze for New Yorkers who are obsessed with natural products is perfumes that mosquitos find off-putting (but hopefully, humans around you won’t).

A few products that perform this magic are Coqui Coqui’s Citger scent, which supposedly acts as a “natural mosquito repellent”; Aromaflage, which sells candles and perfumes that are “a fine fragrance that also repels insects”; and Mrs. White’s Unstung Hero – Natural Spray Anti-Mosquito Eau de Cologne, which is currently sold out at Shea Beauty in Brooklyn.

Of course, despite their higher prices, none of these natural products may be quite as effective as good old fashioned OFF!; according to the CDC, there are only four mosquito repelling ingredients that work: DEET, picaridin, IR3535 and oil of lemon eucalyptus (Mrs. White’s product does contain IR3535).

“I always tell my patients these are the ones that have the studies to back them up, with DEET generally thought as being the most effective,” a dermatologist told the Times. [NYT]
