Now that’s what we call a luxury mark up! Back in March, Balenciaga debuted its latest it-bag, called the “bazar,” which are bright, striped totes that are now available to purchase from Balenciaga’s stores and online for prices starting at $1,495.
The catch? These totes have almost the exact same pattern on them as cheap shopping bags from Thailand that cost approximately $2. For evidence, examine exhibit A:

Apparently, Balenciaga creative director, Demna Gvasalia, who is also the creative director at Vetements where he makes $1,075 oversized t-shirts that read “May the Bridges I Burn Light the Way” and $330 DHL t-shirts, does not totally understand what he has done. He told the Telegraph in an interview in May that he was often stopped by people when he would wear the bag:
“This is just a prototype, but the number of people who have stopped me in the street to ask where it’s from. Even an old lady came up to tell me this morning that she had the same one at home. I thought, ‘I don’t think it is …'”
No, his costs literally a thousand times more. And honestly, we’re not sure why. [Racked]
