Wall Street hedge fund maven and noted philanthropist Robert Wilson took his own life yesterday by leaping from his princely apartment at the Upper West Side’s the San Remo.

Wilson had suffered a serious stroke a few months ago, and his friend Stephen Viscusi told the New York Post that “he always said he didn’t want to suffer, and when the time came, he would be ready.”

Wilson, who was 86, left a suicide note before jumping from his 16th-floor apartment at 145 Central Park West, according to the newspaper. The white-glove co-op building between West 74th and West 75th streets has been home to luminaries such as Steven Spielberg, Rita Hayworth and Bono. [NYP]Hiten Samtani
