Basketball court owner hopes for slam dunk on the condo market

An apartment that started life as a basketball court before being turned into a duplex loft has hit the market today asking $14.5 million.

The pad, which is in Chelsea’s landmarked McBurney YMCA building at 213 West 23rd Street, is being sold by Tenor International Holding Limited. According to city records, the LLC is registered to Beverly Kerzner, the daughter of the South African casino and resort tycoon Sol Kerzner. Kerzner reportedly bought the spread for his daughter in 2007, and paid a little over $8.3 million.

Described by its listing as “epic” and “voluminous”, the 7,000-square-foot apartment has soaring 29-feet ceilings and steel rafters in the double-height living room – which was once the home of the YMCA’s gymnasium and running track.

The four-bedroom apartment also comes with a wood-burning fireplace, a dining area, a sprawling kitchen with an almost 25-foot-long marble counter, and a full guest suite.

Meanwhile, the floors throughout the duplex are paved with heated, “deep midnight” ceramic tiles.

Leonard Steinberg, Herve Senequier, Amy Mendizabal and Calli Sarkesh of Compass have the listing.
